Freshman Course Descriptions

The following courses described are courses that are presently being taught. Year to year old courses are dropped and new courses are added. This is not conclusive of the the courses that will be offered this school year.

BIBLE

Survey of the Life of Christ (9th grade, 1 credit)  It’s no secret that freshmen are on a quest to find life’s answers. They begin to see graduation ahead, and they start developing plans and standards for how they’ll live their lives in the years beyond high school. They need a role model for living, and there’s no better model than Jesus Christ. This course is not only a review of the events surrounding Jesus’ life but it is also an in-depth study of the character of Christ and the application of His teachings. Through a study of the four gospels, freshmen learn to navigate their own lives by using Biblical truths as their standard and they are motivated to make their life’s quest to follow Jesus’ example.  

 

ENGLISH

English I (9th grade, 1 credit)  Ninth grade grammar is designed to improve writing by focusing on conciseness, clear pronoun reference, subordination, parallelism, clear placement of modifiers, and use of active voice. Literature I stories end with Think It Through questions and suggestions to develop each student's ability to organize his thoughts and to write them in an intelligent, orderly manner.

 

MATH

Algebra I (8th-9th grade, 1 credit)  Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra I.   Algebra I is designed to teach students thinking and reasoning skills. This course emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills to lay a foundation for the more advanced math courses. The course content includes basic operations in the real number system, solving word problems, understanding relations, functions, and graphs. Students are introduced to systems of linear equations and inequalities, integral exponents, all forms of polynomials and their factors, rational and irrational expressions, radicals, and quadratic equations.

Geometry (9th-10th grade, 1 credit) Prerequisite: Algebra I.  The purpose of this course is to emphasize critical thinking skills involved in truth relationships and the ability prove fact through deductive reasoning. In this course, students discover the order and perfection of God’s world. Students study lines, planes, angles, triangles, congruence, area, volume, trigonometry, transformations and symmetry, similarity, geometric inequalities, polygons and circles, and constructions.  Formal proofs are emphasized.

SCIENCE

Physical Science (9th-12th grade, 1 credit)  The student will learn to investigate, explore, and better understand God’s world through biology, chemistry, and physics. Great preparation for college.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

World Geography (9th-12th grade, 1/2 credit)  This course is a study of God’s creation seen from a Christian View point. As we study the different countries of the world, we learn, not only about the physical and political aspects of them, but also about the people that live in these countries.

Church History (9th-12th grade, 1/2 credit)  This course is designed to help the student gain a better understanding of the book of Revelation. With this understanding of what is to come in the future, we will have a better understanding of the importance in witnessing now.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education (9th grade, 1/2 credit)  The objective of this one semester course is to help students learn fitness for life. Weight room workouts, aerobic classes, and flexibility/conditioning prepare them for maintaining fitness throughout their adult life. Individual and team sport skills are sharpened along with good sportsmanship and team play.

 

Tennis (9th-12th grade, 1/2 credit)  An instructional course of tennis skills, rules, and etiquette for students of any skill level from beginners to experts. This course is a start to a solid foundation in tennis for singles and doubles play. The student will gain confidence on the tennis court by improving forehand , backhand, serve, and strategy. Students will also improve in tennis skills through drills, practical application, and weight room training.

Golf (9th-12th grade, ½ credit)  An instructional course in golf skills, rules and etiquette for students at any skill level from beginner to expert. This course will provide a solid foundation of basic skills and concepts from choosing clubs to sinking putts. Each student progresses through 16 key skills that will enable the student to have confidence in his/her golfing ability and experience the satisfaction of becoming an accomplished golfer.

LIFE MANAGEMENT

Life Management (9th grade, 1/2 credit)  Life management skills are taught through a Biblical perspective in this one semester course. This course helps to prepare student for issues of life including dating, marriage, money management, first aid, and C.P.R., applying for and maintaining a job, taxes, government duties, getting along with others and evolution. Scripture memorization is emphasized as it trains students to make life decisions based upon the Word of God.

 

VOCATIONAL (REQUIRED)

Computer Keyboarding (9th-12th grade, 1/2 credit)  Keyboarding class offering basic skills in typing using Mavis Beacon, a keyboarding software program.
